Guest article from our Colleagues in Siberia Turkey - absolute leader of summer-2002 in West Siberia (the results of charter programs from Novosibirsk). According to the statistics published in STI Bulletin, tourist summer season-2002 in West Siberia has not only retained the priorities of the previous years but also has revealed the new charter programs from the region. Thus, the positions of Turkish resorts as the most popular tourist destination in this region became stronger. The position of Spain (Catalonia) also became more stable. Instead of Croatia which had no real success in season-2001, Novosibirsk tourist business tried the other Balkan destination - Greece. The charter program to the Egyptian resort Sharm el-Sheikh suggested by the tour-operator VKO Travel became one more experience of last season. The major volume of transportation was carried out by the air-crafts of 'Sibir' air company. Air companies 'AviaExpressCruis' and 'KogalymAvia' were also used in some charter programs to Turkey (Marmaris), Greece (Thessaloniki) and Egypt (Sharm el-Sheikh). Turkey has become the usual leader of the summer season. This year like in summer-2001 charter flights were carried out to Antalya, Marmaris and Bodrum. In all from June till September 39 charter flights to the Turkish resorts with 7898 Siberian tourists aboard took off Novosibirsk. Almost 47% tourists of this number went to Mediterranean coast (Antalya). The share of the tourists who had chosen Turkey as a place of recreation in the total number of the people used direct charter flights from Novosibirsk has increased from 53,7% (according to the results of summer-2001) to 64% this year. Spain has got the second position among the most popular summer destinations. During the summer 14 direct flights to the capital of Catalonia with 2042 tourists aboard took off Novosibirsk 'Tolmachevo' Airport. About half of them (47,4%) were the tourists of the tour-operator 'Natalie Tours' and its agencies. The total growth of the number of the tourists on this destination was over 15% in comparison with the previous year. The total number of the tourists conveyed from Novosibirk to the resorts of Bulgaria, Cyprus and Greece has been 2235 people. The share of Bulgaria in this number was 57%. 34% of tourists spent their holidays at Cyprus. As it was predicted by the specialists in the beginning of the season, summer 2002 has become the most successful post-crisis season. The total number of tourists used direct charter flights from Novosibirsk to the resorts of 6 countries was 12334. In comparison with 2001, the increase was 23,7%. However, the record of summer-1998 was still inaccessible.
